What is the Esports World Cup?

In a surprise announcement on Sunday, a trailer for the Esports World Cup was released with the help of the Las Vegas Sphere! The video announcement, which has already amassed over 10 million views on X, promised a prize pool of over 60 million dollars, which would be a landmark number for any event, especially an Esports one. The global event will take place in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia during this Summer of 2024, and while it hasn’t been confirmed there is wide speculation that it will be between July and August.

Game Changer to Esports

The CEO of the Esports World Cup Foundation Ralf Reichert, says that this tournament will be a game changer for the Esports community stating, “More than $60 million is a testament to our investment in the future of global esports, a commitment to esports fans who deserve exceptional events and an extension of our mission to create meaningful competitive opportunities with life-changing prize pools for esports players everywhere.” Anything with this much financial backing should be taken extremely seriously, Saudi Arabia getting involved with boxing heavily recently changed the combat sports landscape as we know it, with fighters Francis Ngannou and Anthony Joshua taking home an estimated 70 million dollars combined between the two of them. Reichert has already promised things such as live concerts during the event, fireworks, and an Esports arena unlike anything seen before. The Esports landscape as we know it will likely look quite different after this historic event!
