College Football has a problem

Expanded Playoffs lead to lopsided results

The College Football Playoffs were under heavy criticism in the past for only having 4 teams in the playoffs. The change from the 9 year 4 team limit was supposed to bring a newfound excitement to the College Football Playoffs, and they did prior to the games actually taking place. The new 12 team playoff format was supposed to bring more parity to the College Football landscape, and while it did do this to an extent with the expanded teams, not one of the four first round games were even within single digits. Every favorite in the first round won by a double digit margin, including a 42-17 Ohio State victory against Tennessee, the primetime game of the first round, which perfectly summarized the first round action.

Ohio State dominated Tennessee 42-17

Lane Kiffin sounds off on social media

12 teams make the College Football Playoffs, Ole Miss was the 13th team. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was like the rest of us this weekend, sitting on his couch watching every first round game blowout. In particular, Penn State’s 38-10 trashing of the school who made it over Ole Miss, SMU. Lane Kiffin took to X to voice his displeasure with the committee's decision to include SMU in the playoffs over Ole Miss tweeting, “Way to keep us on the edge of our seats Committee …. Riveting.” The post, understandable and justifiable, received backlash from many, pointing out that the expanded playoff field leaves little room for teams to still feel snubbed. This, combined with the fact that there are now more opportunities now than ever to make the College Football Playoffs, leave many understandably saying that Kiffin’s comments towards SMU were in poor taste.

The Final 8 Teams

While the first round of the College Football Playoffs left much to be desired, the next round appears much better. The games feature Boise State against Penn State on New Years Eve, and 3 games on New Year's Day, with Arizona State and Texas, Oregon and Ohio State, and Georgia vs Notre Dame. Both Ohio State vs Oregon and Notre Dame vs Georgia are just 1.5 point spreads, and project to be two of the most competitive games in the College Football Playoffs in years. Both of these games could give the new College Football Playoff format a much needed boost.
